The Real Pandemic is not COVID
It is our mental health
We are all struggling through this uncommon year, trying to find ways to cope with all the troubles. But the real enemy isn’t clear to us, the threat still lies hidden behind this social media-consuming world.
The real pandemic of the XXI century started before this century. Studies report that the problem comes from as far as 1990.
Depression…
One of the biggest modern health-threats.
The WHO has already acknowledged this fact:
Major depressive disorder will become the leading cause of disability in the world by 2030
The world is more motivated to make money and be successful than to take care of their mind and body.
We all focus on the material parts of our lives, money, houses, investments, etc. Which are important, but the question is…
More important than your sanity?
One fact that is very impressive about the overall effect of depression on the mind is anhedonia.
Imagine that you work hard each day to save some money. Your goal is to buy the most expensive, luxurious, delicious dessert you’ve ever seen.
You keep your 9–5 for a whole year, you save more than you can think is possible. You work like a madman.
The moment comes, you buy the cake, take it home, then…
You can’t taste anything
All the work you did was for nothing, isn’t that sad?
That is precisely what happens with anhedonia, you lose the capacity to enjoy life.
You could be working towards your dream life, without realizing that the thing that’s growing is your inability to enjoy it.
The statistics showing the growth of depression diagnosis are endless, we could analyze them all, but that isn’t my goal.
What I want to achieve with this brief story is that you become aware of the risk that the so-called “hustle” lifestyle has.
We aren’t machines, we need to rest, live, enjoy.
Take some minutes of your day to analyze how you live, how everything in your hearth is. How you feel.
Find some time for yourself, listen to your breath, pay attention to the things that pop-up in your mind.
Feel your body, care for it. With a couple of minutes of this per day, you can avoid falling into a depressive state.
